Sonos Play:5 gen1 Repair

The Sonos Play:5 gen1 was one of the best-selling Sonos speakers and was launched in 2009. The speaker has two tweeters, two midrange drivers and a bass driver.

Most of the problems occur in the passive input stage or the control of the switching power supply. The Play:5 gen1 is very sensitive to mains voltage spikes, such as those that occur when the neutral conductor is interrupted or a lightning strike occurs. Occasionally, Alpha's WiFi cards also cause problems. This is usually manifested in the behavior that the Play:5 can't perform a reset and flashes white/orange for more than 1 minute (usually it takes 20 to 30 seconds). Another known problem is that the music only plays very quite even when the volume is at 100%. However, the headphone output still works without any problems.

If a connection to the Play:5 cannot be established, it is recommended to connect the device directly to the router via an Ethernet cable. A power reset should be done again by pressing the play/pause button while the cable is plugged in. The play/pause button can be released once the LED flashes white/orange. After 20 to 30 seconds, it should now should flash green. If it does not, there is a hardware defect.

The Sonos Play:5 gen1 is very often repaired in our workshop. We also check all functions and replace parts to prevent future failures.
